About

Girovaga is Italian for wandering about or strolling. I like to think it can represent my mental meanderings as well as our actual travels.

Here we are atop Edinburgh Castle in 2016. A windy day, but sunny and warm by Scottish standards.

Here you will find almost five years of postings done while we lived in Rome, Italy when this blog was entitled “Good Day Rome.” Now that we are back in the U.S., Good Day Rome really doesn’t fit so I have chosen Girovaga as a place I can write not only about our ongoing travels but also about bits from daily life.

A little about us. We are retired and living in Lincoln City, Oregon, rather a cultural leap from Rome, where we lived from May of 2012 through October 2016. Work took us to Italy and once we could retire we decided to stay and use Rome as a base for our travels for 18 months. It was a tremendous experience.

Here we are atop Cascade Head and the wide Pacific Ocean in 2017.

So why are we back in the U.S? While we loved much about our life in Italy, we also missed many things about living in the U.S. Understanding how things work, friends, family, home ownership. You will find lots of blog posts on cultural differences and our experiences. Some are pretty funny.

We travel annually to Europe, primarily Switzerland and Italy but you’ll also find pieces written here about the U.K., France, and even the U.S. on occasion.

I have another website that I post to infrequently, so take a look if you have time. Project Easy Hiker was created in support of our two books, Walking in Italy’s Val Gardena and Walking in Switzerland’s Berner Oberland

In the magnificent Berner Oberland, above Lauterbrunnen, 2023.

It’s so good to see folks enjoying their life as seniors. I’ve been retired now for almost 5 years and continue to enjoy every minute. I’m relaxed and no longer need an alarm clock. 🙂

Hhhhmmmm…..working in Rome, been to the ambassador’s residence, attended the Marine Corp Ball. My dear, it sounds as if we are living parallel lives except we are in Buenos Aires!

Gosh, I don’t know if that is entirely a good thing. I don’t know that I’d like the thought of having to leave Italy, to leave easy access to all the other gorgeous European countries.

Thanks Audrey. We do have to work and do laundry, so it’s not all a vacation, but we do get to do laundry and work in Roms, which is pretty darn fantastic! You’ll have a blast in Rome!

    Hello,

Read your entire blog! Sounds amazing. Looking forward to the dag we may make that dramatic move to Europe. Currently, wife and son are spending the next few weeks in Italy… Rome – Santa Maria – Sorrento – Castelli – Rome…. Would love to ask you a few questions if that would be possible…. I look forward to hearing from you.

You guys are an inspiration — we all aspire to live the life of adventure. You have set the bar quite high mia amici. PS they have dredged the Pond at FH. A few ducks still sticking it out.
